In his 2018 Independence Day speech, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the launch the Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM). Later, on Sep 23, 2018, the PM formally launched the scheme from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand with its new name Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). The scheme became operational from Sep 25, 2018.
